The Dinamo City–KF Tirana rivalry is a rivalry between football clubs KF Tirana and Dinamo City, the two most successful clubs from the city of Tirana in Albania. It is one of the longest currently running top-flight derby in Albania.[1] KF Tirana dominates either historically, or during last 30 seasons against the Dinamo.

However, Dinamo have won more ties in their Cup confrontation.

Title of shame

On June 24, 1967, it happened. Tirana and Partizani competed in the derby of the 19th round of the 1967 Championship. The game had been completed and ended with a score of 2:1. Fans were calmly exiting the stands while players had departed from the pitch and were making their way to the dressing rooms when two players from opposing teams engaged in a verbal confrontation, which quickly concluded on the spot.

The paper headlines the next morning were a big shock: "AFA directly decides Tirana and Partizani forfeit the match 0:3, lose 3 points each, and will automatically lose their remaining matches!" A lot of people were wondering: "What went awry during the game that took place on the field, which evoked strong emotions and where the fans accepted the outcome." "What actions did the teams take in order to warrant such severe consequences?"

Nevertheless, it was later revealed: the choice to kick out both teams was made by the Ministry of Affairs and then conveyed to AFA for implementation. Due to a significant point difference, Partizani was already eliminated from the title race, leaving Dinamo the only team with a chance to win by defeating Tirana, the current leaders. This opportunity arose after a minor verbal altercation between two players post-match. The reality is that they were unable to accept that KF Tirana was on the verge of winning their 3rd consecutive title over Partizani or Dinamo. On the day the championship trophy was presented, Skënder Jareci, the Dinamo manager, refused to take the traditional victory lap, claiming that Dinamo didn't actually earn the title!

If Dinamo were to give up that game and then lose the following three games, they would secure enough points to surpass Tirana and become champions. Albanian football was shamed to the extent that even UEFA has not yet acknowledged Dinamo as champions for that year. Due to the disqualification controversy, Dinamo was prevented from participating in the European Cup by UEFA the following season; as a result, Braunschweig was awarded a bye and went on to make it to the quarter-finals.[2]
