Summary

Description

At Museum of Flight, Boeing Field, Seattle.

This was the very first example of the most popular airliner in history, the Boeing 737. First flown in 1967, this particular example served as Boeing's test aircraft until 1974, when it was acquired by NASA's Langley Research Center for avionics research.

Only 30 -100 series 737s were built. Far more popular was the slightly longer -200 series, which brought jet service to small, unimproved airports. Boeing has since redesigned the 737 several times for increased capacity, range, speed, and economy - first, the Classic series (-300, -400, -500) in the 1980s, then the Next Generation series (-600, -700, -800, -900) in the late 1990s, and the upcoming MAX to be introduced in 2016.
