Publicity photo of Freeman Gosden as Amos and Charles Correll as Andy from the radio program Amos 'n' Andy.
Date
No original date. The photo dates from the show's time at CBS. It was brought there the first time in 1938 by the program's new sponsor, Campbell's, and remained at CBS until 1943, when it moved back to NBC. It was back at CBS by 1948; Paley's "talent raid" offered performers a buy-out which was said to decrease their income tax liabilities. The pair sold all rights for the program to CBS when it returned there. It left the radio airwaves for good in 1960. From the headlines on the pictured newspaper, the US was involved in WWII, so this is circa 1941-1943.
CBS Radio/Amos 'n' Andy show. The publicity department wrote the release on "behalf" of Amos 'n' Andy; a very faint "Please Credit" stamp is visible. Other items had been written this way previously. When the show was sponsored by Pepsodent, a premium map was offered for toothpaste cartons. Listeners who responded got the map and a letter from "Amos 'n' Andy" promoting the program and the Colgate brands.
