In the N. end of theverandah is a chapel with a Buddhaseated on a lotus supported by snake-hooded figures, and on the right of thisis a pictorial litany.^ No. 4 is a muchruined vihara, now measuring 35 ft.by 39 ft. deep. At the inner end isa cross aisle, beyond which a shrine,with a statue of Buddha under theBo-tree, and two cells were excavated;the columns are similar to those inNo. 2. No 5, known as the Maha-wara, and formerly as the Dherwaracave, is again reached by steps. Itis the largest single-storeyed viharacave here, measuring 58^ ft. by 1171 See p. 41. ROUTE 6. KLLORA—BUDDHIST CAVES 75 ft. deep. The roof is carried by tworows of ten columns, similar to thosein No. 2, with two more betweenthem at each end, and two stonebenches run down the cave parallelto the ranges of pillars.
