Robert S. Greenran against him when he sought re election in 1884. It was aDemocratic tidal-wave year, the one in which Grover Clevelandwas chosen to live in the White House, and Kean went the wayof all things Republican. Two years later he girded his loinsfor the fray again, and easily vanquished McMahon, whom theDemocrats set up against him. The second subsequent year,when he asked his people for a renewal of his term was Presi-dential year again, and he went down bemath the Democratic■wave that swept over the State.
