Example Orkhon inscription, spelling the name of the sky god, Tengri (/teŋri/); Transliterated T²NGR²I (Old Turkic Unicode: 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃).

The word is found in the first line of the Kul tegin inscription (8th century).

The kaznpu.kz website (Language Committee of Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan) gives the beginning of the inscription as follows: (this has not been verified with published literature)

transcription: UZAG²UG² : T²NGR²I : S¹R¹A : Y¹G¹Z : Y²R² : QIL¹NTQUD¹A
interpretation: Öze Kök Teŋіri asïra yaγïz Jer qïlïntaquda ...
translation: "When the blue sky above and the brown earth below were created ..."
(note, the numerals ¹ and ² in the above transcription scheme indicate back and front vowels, respectively, intrinsic in the consonant signs)
