Rick and Morty vs. Genocider (stylised RICK AND MORTY VS GENOCIDER) is a Japanese anime short film based on the American television series/franchise Rick and Morty, produced by Sola Entertainment and Telecom Animation Film first aired unannounced on Toonami on July 25, 2020, before being widely release on Adult Swim's YouTube channel on July 26, 2020.[1][2][3][4] Written and directed by Takashi Sano, the film received positive reviews from critics, with its success leading to the production of a second anime short film from Sano, Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), in 2021, and a 10-episode spin-off series, Rick and Morty: The Anime, in 2024.

Production and release

Produced by Sola Entertainment and Telecom Animation Film, written and directed by Takashi Sano, Rick and Morty vs. Genocider was released unannounced to Toonami at Adult Swim Con's "How They Do It: 'Rick and Morty'" panel on July 25, 2020, before being released to Adult Swim's YouTube channel the next day,[1][2] accompanying a teaser for the series' fifth season.[3][4] The English subtitles were produced by Sentai Studios.

Rick and Morty vs. Genocider received a generally positive critical reception.[6][7][8]

Sequel and spin-off series

Following the success of success of Rick and Morty vs. Genocider, a stand-alone sequel again written and directed by Sano, Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), was released in 2021, followed by a 10-episode spin-off series, Rick and Morty: The Anime, in 2024.[9][10]
