Template talk:Horse-drawn carriages

Suggest rename to "Template:Horse drawn carriages"[edit]

I plan to edit most, if not all, of the individual carriage pages. This template is a good starting point. Though used only in a single article, Carriage, it could easily be used as a navigational template at the bottom of each carriage page.

The current title of Template:Types of horse-drawn carriages is too long, and "types of" in the name is unnecessary. I recommend moving this to Template:Horse-drawn carriages. Grorp (talk) 06:59, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Whiskey carriage[edit]

@Grorp:, Hi Grorp, how come you reverted the deletion of Whiskey Carriage, which is only a redirect?Halbared (talk) 20:00, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Halbared: A whiskey is a carriage in its own right, and is only a type of chaise. I moved the whiskey content from One-horse shay to Chaise, changed the redirect's target, then added content and citations (though there is more to be done). In fact, a whiskey is an English carriage and shay is American, so whiskey never belonged in the shay article. The word shay is simply a mispronunciation of chaise, and the alleged "one-horse shay" is just a chaise; I will eventually be moving the One-horse shay content into Chaise as well, and One-horse shay will become a redirect to there. There are lots of niggly little bits to move around, fixes to be made, and citations to be added; can't do it all in one go.
That a carriage is represented in Wikipedia by a redirect is no reason to not list it separately on a comprehensive list of carriages. My goal is that eventually the list of vehicles in Template:Horse-drawn carriages will be a sort of mirror of Category:Carriages. Per WP:EXISTING, redirects should also normally be avoided for the reasons outlined in WP:NAVNOREDIRECT. The general exception to this is when the redirect represents a distinct sub-topic of an article rather than simply being an alternative name.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 20:23, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Grorp: Ta very much, Grorp, that's a complete response which I was hoping for, I was expecting maybe some rule over redirects in templates. Though it seems odd to me. I only came across One hoss shay this week, and was mildly amazed at the varied range of small carriages that exist. My grandad had traps (and a bigger thing), which I have a memory of being on, but which we kept (along with the brasses and a great many other things) until they eventually rotted away (I think).Halbared (talk) 21:34, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is really cool that you had experience with them, and nice memories. Since most carriages were made of wood, it is very common that they disintegrated unless they were kept carefully dry or went to some sort of museum. And then there was the sadness of most horse-drawn vehicles being burnt during World War II to melt down the metal parts for the war effort.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 22:03, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
