Re: Grammar help

[edit]

Hi, good to see you're back, that sounds like an interesting project. Literally, this term refers to books that have been well used and have become worn away at the edges, but in this context I think it means the city looks "well lived in". Hope that makes sense. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:04, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm thinking it means comfortable, homely; not brand new looking and therefore unfamiliar, but rather a well-used habitat. That's what I mean by "well lived in". Though I think you should ask for a few opinions on this, I wouldn't want you getting into trouble for misinterpreting the text! Mattythewhite (talk) 21:07, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Lost in translation

[edit]

Might it mean that particular film was second in the running order? Could you give me more of the sentence to try and establish the context? Mattythewhite (talk) 18:55, 2 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've Googled the term and found this, which states "...the hopeless marketing strategies of Golan and Globus – I finally caught it playing second feature to Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce at a seedy cinema in Blackpool". From what I can gather it either means the film was second in the running order, or was played on a less prestigious screen in the cinema complex. 20:01, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Re: Lost In Translation

[edit]

Going by Oxford Dictionaries, if one roves they "travel constantly without a fixed destination" and brief refers to a "set of instructions given to a person about a job or task". So I'd say it refers to someone whose job sees them travel frequently, which befits the role of a cultural ambassador. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:10, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, old friend!! I have learned my lesson. If I can find more info, then I will add it to the article. But since my only source no longer has anything, it will be long time coming if ever!

As you can see, I'm four months overdue in leaving WP and I still have not improved the Madrid C page!! I have taken the advise of cutting back on my WP time and seens to help me from being irritating and irritated. Welcome back!! Raul17 (talk) 18:50, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rui Barros

[edit]

Edit war in Rui Barros. Rpo.castro (talk · contribs) continues to add non-notable honours despite no conclusion from discussions. SLBedit (talk) 19:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rpo.castro does not care and reverts me by pointing out an archived discussion. SLBedit (talk) 20:52, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I did that. Please give your input at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Youth honours. SLBedit (talk) 20:58, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bruno Cortês

[edit]

Is he known as Bruno Cortez or simply as Cortez? Soccerway displays "Bruno Cortez". SLBedit (talk) 18:28, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry to hear that.
Thanks I will change the name in infobox. SLBedit (talk) 23:40, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody may have got us two confused!

long-standing affection for football
Thank you, AL, user of Romance languages and with "long-standing affection", for quality articles such as 2014 FA Community Shield, for copy-drilling, for helping the Flappy Bird fly, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:52, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

An award I received today, given to one Wikipedia a day since 2007. A lot of what she has written is based on the description on my user page, but notice how she refers to me as AL! '''tAD''' (talk) 20:29, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please sort it out, I meant the one who received DYK for 2014 FA Community Shield ;) - don't remember where I saw AL, - an older talk perhaps? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:29, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Steven Defour

[edit]

Yes I agree, those fans should remember that Monsieur Defour is somebody's son and a human being like everybody else. The tone used by fans at some big football matches is far too violent for what is an entertainment spectacle. It's not all that common in England any more, at least in the Premier League - far less "passion" (and I'm counting both good and bad forms of enthusiasm under the term "passion"). We sometimes hear about MUFC fans singing about the Hillsborough disaster or Liverpool fans about the Munich air disaster, but this is very rare as it's well documented that most of the fans of those clubs live in the "Home counties" (the rural commuter areas around Greater London). There's usually disgusting stuff at Old Firm games, but these fixtures are a rarity since Rangers went down the financial toilet.

Strangely, I can think of an inverse of this situation from 2009. Emmanuel Adebayor scored for Man City against Arsenal, and ran the full length of the pitch afterwards to taunt the travelling Gunner fans. He had a fair share of sky-blue seats thrown in his direction, my 14-year-old self recalls. '''tAD''' (talk) 00:37, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just noticed something - it's a bit weird how a Francophone football club had a banner in English. Local pride much? I take it from his first name that Defour may be a Dutch speaker, "rood of dood" coincidentally gives the same rhyme as they wanted. '''tAD''' (talk) 00:43, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What Ronaldo was sent off for was nothing compared to what he wasn't sent off for. An interesting point about Córdoba, I would have expected for a smaller club like them to make better of native talent (like Burnley F.C. do more than most Premier League teams) but I suppose football has changed now. I really can not see any first-team future for Martin Ødegaard, he could be the next Freddy Adu, but his £80,000 a week will make him the most popular kid on the playground. And getting a lot of money as a child makes you happy for your whole life — just ask Michael Jackson and Macaulay Culkin (sarcasm) '''tAD''' (talk) 13:03, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just had another look at Burnley's squad. Their entire team is anglophone (Ashley Barnes is quite blatantly from his name nowhere near as "Austrian" as Arnold Schwarzenegger). That's even more homogenous than my local Football League Two team, who have a Swiss and a Frenchman '''tAD''' (talk) 13:07, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Javier Balboa

[edit]

I reverted your edit about national caps. SLBedit (talk) 03:46, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe we should take it to WP:FOOTY. SLBedit (talk) 05:05, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vasco!

You seem to have a lot of experience when it comes to Portuguese football, think you could help me fill in all the captains? Having made a personnel and kits section, I have managed to find information for managers, kit manufacturers and shirt sponsors (excluding Vitória de Setúbal), but I need help with the captains as I have only found five of them (Benfica, Boavista, Porto, Sporting CP and Vitória de Setúbal). Cheers. Arbero (talk) 14:37, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see, but if I find any images on Google (i.e. club squads) or videos on YouTube (if any of the players are wearing the armband), perhaps you can help me? But thanks a lot, for such an old season, I'm surprised you have a vast of knowledge when it comes to Portuguese football. ;) Arbero (talk) 21:19, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Last week, I found a photograph of the 1999–2000 Marítimo squad.[1] Unfortunately, none of them is wearing a captain's armband, so I can't tell who the captain is, perhaps you know? I have also managed to find a video, a league match between Sporting CP and Marítimo (highlights).[2] Since you understand Portuguese, do you have any knowledge if the commentator ever mentions who the captain for Marítimo is? I tried to determine myself by looking at the video, but I'm not fluent in the language and I couldn't either tell which player was wearing the armband since the quality is poor. Arbero (talk) 22:22, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, ok, since you sound uncertain, should I wait? For your information, I added the captains that you listed (excluding the uncertain ones). Arbero (talk) 23:39, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Here's another one, the 1999–2000 Vitória de Guimarães squad.[3] I think one of the players is wearing an armband. I googled Pedro Espinha, but he looks a lot older that the player with the armband. Arbero (talk) 23:53, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So, Meira was the main captain, and not Espinha? Are you sure? If yes, then I will add it to the season article. Arbero (talk) 00:05, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK then, I have added it. Arbero (talk) 00:33, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What about Rio Ave then? I could not locate one with an armband, but here are two pictures of the squad like the Marítimo one.[4][5] Can you tell who the captain is without the armband? Arbero (talk) 01:47, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I trust you. Have added him. Arbero (talk) 01:58, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to you, I have only three ones left. Here is an article regarding Campomaiorense.[6] Does it mention who the captain is? Thanks. Arbero (talk) 02:01, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I hope you are right. Added him. Two left now. Anyway, I have to go to bed now as it's quite late here in Sweden (04:05). We can try and find the captains of Campomaiorense and Farense tomorrow, ok? Bye for now. Arbero (talk) 03:06, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Stats tables

[edit]

Hello. Please would you not remove inline sourcing from career stats tables (club ones, anyway: the national team ones shouldn't generally need it), as you did at João Pereira (Portuguese footballer). We're recommended at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players#Career statistics style guide to source each row individually. Additionally, please would you not use your edit summary for telling another editor to shoo. Thank you for your understanding. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:35, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What does Ah, and indeed, "it" is afoot mean? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:41, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Please look at the edit history of João Pereira (Portuguese footballer). The last person to edit before yourself was me, and I edited to correct another editor's mistake. I really don't appreciate your repeated implications that I'm in some way stalking your edits. Please remember than in this case it was you who was editing against WP:FOOTY guidelines and abusing the edit summary. I'm not wasting my time explaining yet again what sources are for.
As I'm sure you're aware by now, if a player hasn't played in a fully professional league or at senior international level, they don't automatically qualify for an article. Struway2 (talk) 18:06, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You certainly did use the word "stalking", although you said you wouldn't: I am not going to use the word "stalking" because it would be unfair to you and a downright lie, but I feel my edits are still under great scrutiny. Surprised you didn't spot it on my talk page when you were there.
Sources: We put a source next to the information it verifies so that 1) anyone updating can readily see where they're supposed to check the figures before changing them without having to pick through a string of links at the top of the table; and, much more important, so that 2) the reader can readily see where the information comes from without having to pick through a string of links at the top of the table.
Nafti: The article has used publisher not work for BBC Sport since 2009, so there was no reason for change; the newspaper parameter does the same as work, but using it for newspaper sources is clearer/more intuitive; and I didn't think your slight wording change about signing Herrera was an improvement. Don't know what you're on about re translation of ref#15. Struway2 (talk) 18:49, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I didn't spot that one. It's a translation into English, not word-by-word. In English we'd say Cadiz, not Cadiz CF. Struway2 (talk) 19:06, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Think you'll find it was the cite-web reference for him signing for Derby that was formatted differently from all the others :-) Struway2 (talk) 19:37, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
