TalkBack Carlang

[edit]

Hi Excirial, Thanks for your feedback on the page I created (sited link below). I've noticed my error. It appears that I included the references in the external links and failed to add the necessary citations within the article. Chalk one up for rookie error (I've been away from wikipedia for months now).

Unless I've missed something, I think I've corrected those errors now. Please read through and let me know if there's anything else that you think needs changing. You'll find the revised article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Babatunde_Rotimi. My references include articles from CNN[1], The Guardian[2] and an official press release from Caines. That counts as reliable doesn't it?

Carlang (talk) 06:36, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hiyas there Carlang,
Looks entirely fine to me, definitely better sources then most article's. Seeing the changes i would say it is in good enough shape to move it to the mainspace, so that has been done as we speak write. I also note that you left a comment on Avs5221's talk page regarding the page notability of the page, and i think that AVS is referring to WP:BLP1E, or biographies for persons notable for just a single event (Or rather: Having received media coverage for 1 event), where there is no indication that they will receive coverage again (As an example: There was an article about a girl who fell down a drain, and half the countries newspapers actually covered that incident. Plenty of decent sources to work with, but no lasting importance nor notability thus no need for an article).
Winning a notable price is another story though, as winning it requires mostly indicates that someone is important enough in his or her field of experience to actually be considered for an award. I had a chat with Avs as well, and we both seem to agree on that point, so well, no reason not to approve the article as already done. Besides this i can say little else then "Well done on the article, looks fine. And thanks for writing it! :)" Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:26, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Excirial,
Thanks for the help. I understand what you (and AVS) meant in the way of notability. I'll be sure to take it into consideration which future articles. If it's okay with you, I'd really appreciate it if I could stop by to ask questions on any issues that I may be unclear with when working on future projects.
Have a good one.

Sure, happy to help if i can. I'm mostly involved in maintenance work as opposed to article writing, but i assume i can answer most questions (Or at least point in the right direction). Just to be sure i would point out that there is also a Helpdesk and an IRC Chat help channel around in case you need them, since i might not be around to much at times. Note that the chat channel can be more or less populated depending on the time of day, as it is manned (like the rest of Wikipedia) by volunteers. If no one is around the helpdesk or a user talk page such as mine is a more surefire bet to get a response. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 17:43, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Carlang: Some Advice

[edit]

Hi, I'm back. I was considering rewriting the content for this page. I'm trying to improve my experience at formatting articles. Got any tips on how I should proceed with this one in particular. I'm guessing I don't have to worry about references in this case. My current line of thought is to use the page of an established footballer like Zidane or (God bless him) Messi but I'm worried that that might be over reaching.. Carlang (talk) 08:31, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hiyas there Carlang,
Personally i would suggest going over the article content first, and at least cursory verifying that the added references support what has been written. When taking over another persons article for continuation you might find that it looks decent at first glance, while having some flaws that are hidden on first sight (Copyright violations, references that don't support what has been written and so on). Best to check in advance rather than finding out in retrospect. (After a lot of work)
After that you might want to look at the structure and formatting of the article. Right now it contains several 1 or 2 line sections, which are really not needed (A single biography section might actually be enough to cover the limited amount of content in the article, perhaps with a subsection or two to divide his football and other activities). After that you probably want to do the basic article style and formatting such as adding interwiki links, bolding the subject on the first line, adding some categories and perhaps a "see also" or "external links" section is the need arises. I would also advice merging the two infoboxes - all the content can be covered in the Template:Infobox football biography infobox, so there is no real need to use a generic infobox template as well.
I would definitely advice using another article as an example for your own, and i would suggest to (always) use an article rated as a good article, since you can be certain these are well written and correctly formated. It might be wise to use a smaller article such as Ken Barnes (footballer) or Fandi Ahmad as an example though. World-class players such as Messi generally have a huge load of content covered in the article, which warrants a different article and section structure then a smaller article would use. (For example, Messi's carrer is split in multiple sections with an even larger amount of subsections, whereas Ken Barnes just needs two sections to cover his entire career).
Hope this helps, and with kind regards, Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 18:20, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Excirial,
Thanks so much for the advice. They were so insightful. I'll get to work on it and see if I can do justice to your recommendations.

Hi. When you recently edited Sony Alpha 37, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bravia (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Replaceable fair use File:EmbroidMe Storefront, Westminster, Colorado.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:EmbroidMe Storefront, Westminster, Colorado.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 09:08, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:CellularSales.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Specifying "critics"

[edit]

Thanks for editing ReachOut Healthcare America!

One little thing: About this edit, there are users that tag "Critics say" and ask "which ones?" - The reason why I specified the newspaper is to answer the question to the best degree possible - the newspaper doesn't specify which ones, but we can say the newspaper said so and remove any tags asking which ones. By saying "The newspaper says critics say" we have the best way of knowing who is making the assertion WhisperToMe (talk) 05:39, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also, about this edit, the source article says "ReachOut Healthcare's dental practice was paid $12.5 million from AHCCCS over the past two years, according to records obtained by The Arizona Republic." - So it is saying it in the singular "dental practice" rather than "practices" - Thanks for fixing the error I made regarding two companies instead of three WhisperToMe (talk) 05:43, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have unblocked you.

[edit]

Any unblock carries risk, but so does leaving someone blocked when they seem to "get it". As I'm satisfied that you are sincere and have a basic grasp of the concerns (and the ramifications if they are ignored) I'm going to unblock you with a few simple restrictions:

  • 1. User:Kaldari has offered to mentor, go to their talk page and keep them on speed dial.
  • 2. No new articles created for a year. This is a little harsh, but COI editing can be tricky and I'm convinced you need to work with what we already have here while learning. I'm in marketing by profession, I understand the trials and tribulations of learning how to take all promotional language out of article contribs. I'm confident you will be able to, but prefer you keep it to existing articles.
  • 3. Run any external link by your mentor or myself before adding to an article. This is another way to get into trouble by it looking like you are spamming.
  • 4. Sincerely take the time to read WP:COI. If you want to add content to an article that you have a conflict in, I would expect you to use the talk page instead of editing directly. This is the same that I do even now. I'm not asking to avoid COI, just disclose honestly and take extra steps so that we don't feel we have to constantly monitor you.

I'm probably more forgiving than most when it comes to COI, simply because our policies are not clearly prohibiting it, and I know some COI editors have become good contributors, the choice is yours. I strongly suggest treading lightly around COI or avoiding it altogether, but I'm not going to make that a hard condition. Be forwarned that the next block for promotional editing will likely be an indefinite one, and there is likely nothing I could do to help. If I think you are spamming or violating the terms of this unblock, I will be the first to block you.

Now that this is out of the way, I want to assume the best of faith and encourage you to read up on some policies like WP:RS, WP:V and WP:GNG. This is the same I recommend to any newish editor. What I am hoping is that you find some joy in editing at Wikipedia, with the least amount of hassles. I edit on subject I'm interested in (but not COI in) like old cars, and North Carolina culture, history and events (I live here now). Find some areas you love and enjoy some COI-free editing. Even though I'm an old guy, doing this has made me a better writter in my job, so it is a win/win situation. Hopefully, I can look forward to productive and uneventful contributions from you in the future. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 18:37, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Glad things have moved forward. I'll second everything Dennis says, and add that I'll be happy to answer any questions that you have or help mediate any problems, although I hope there won't be any :) Kaldari (talk) 20:04, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Dennis. I'm really glad to be given the benefit of doubt. I'll visit the pages you recommended and take your advise about focusing on subjects I'm interested in. But for now, I'll just stick to familiarizing myself with all the Wiki rules, while relying on Kaldari's guidance.

GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

GOCE November drive wrap-up

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

GOCE July 2013 news report

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

Your article submission Gaileen David

[edit]

Hello Carlang. It has been over six months since you last edited your article submission, entitled Gaileen David.

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!

May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.

Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; remember it's your Guild, and it doesn't run itself!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Miniapolis and Baffle gab1978.
