Born's rule, we all know, specifies the probability of one real eigenvalue that would characterize the system when measured. It emphatically does not specify the present state of the system, since a superposition of eigenfunctions does not tell us the properties (eigenvalues) of the system at the current time, t. The use of the term "state function" to denominate the wave function is sloppy, misleading nomenclature that had been uncritically repeated by quantum physicists over many decades. It has obviously led to misunderstanding of the quantum reality.
The superposition of two values for the cat, 'alive' and 'dead', are predictions, according to Born's Rule, of what will be observed at measurement. That superposition does not specify a cat that is both alive and dead now, no matter how the wave function has been misrepresented in some research.
