Definition of Tool1, Tool2, and Tool3

Some comments:

  • I didn't leave due to any conflicts or animosity. There were several reasons why I've drifted away, including the need to spend less time doing edits.
  • I still want to see Wikipedia grow and succeed, I still do ~25 anon edits a month, and I advocate for Wikipedia every chance I get.
  • Apologies for leaving the tools hanging, and not providing for a smoother transition. I haven't kept up with their status, but hopefully the tools can be transitioned to others who are interested in maintaining or enhancing them.
  • The email link still works. If anyone is updating any tool code, feel free to ask about clarifications about the code. For other questions, I've tended not to answer... apologies, but I'm not dedicating as much time to Wikipedia as I used to.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Epic Pinball.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Epic Pinball.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Wannabe Kate

[edit]

About wannabe kate: If I understand correctly, the script will query a wiki found at the location of (input)+"/w/" - Right? This makes it impossible (i think) to query wikis who do not have a /w/ location, but rather have it in a different folder or in the root directory (such as, in my case, [www.wowwiki.com]). Was the tool never intended to be able to interact with anything besides wikipedia, is there a way to do it and i was unable to figure it out, or is there a way you could implement it? Thanks in any case. ~ twsx | talkcont | ~ 09:48, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Interiot -- I wondered whether "Wannabe Kate" was a reference to Ben Folds Five -- and sure enough, you added a link to the song on the Kate page :-) The article for the song was never written, and someone's removed the link in the meantime -- oh well, time to hand out the Baghavad Gitas... Orphaned non-free media (Image:Mr Coffee logo.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Mr Coffee logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 01:46, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Template:Long captions

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:Long captions requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{tranclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Fair use rationale for Image:MonsterGarage.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:MonsterGarage.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:NOVA logo.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:NOVA logo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. My wishlist

[edit]

Hello Interiot, I note you have retired yet some folks have had contact. I wanted a tool that ranked articles in terms of my mainspace edits to them - the top 15 mainspace edits are listed in the Wannabe Kate tool, but as I have nearly 30k edits and many articles, I like to keep track of articles I may have edited alot in a desire to get them to a semi-stable point of GA or FA status. If you are unable to make a tool like this can you let me know who could? I am sure Dweller and Awadewit among others would like it too :)

My edit count.

[edit]

Hello. The edit counting chart is a great thing, but I have n issue to address. It's probably minor, but I know I can't fix it. Yesterday, I created a template for the band Vintersorg. This is that template. I have donated three edits to that template, but the edit counting chart is only acknowledging two of the edits. Is there anything that you can do about that? Thanks. Your tool

[edit]

This one, specifically. I don't understand the average edits per day. The number doesn't make sense even if the first day was when Wikipedia started. The counter claims that I only have made 0.61 edits/day. In reality, the number is much, much higher. Enigma message Review 01:30, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I came here about the same thing... It says I have 4.8 edits per day, but it is closer to 40. [2] There must be an error somewhere. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 18:00, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:NOVA logo.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:NOVA logo.jpg.

Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:08, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tool1/WannabeKate

[edit]

I have been playing with your tool, for example here and sometimes I notice that it seems to be possibly "confused" and divide the edits of a page into two, the page and its archive. For example, in this case with KillerChihuahua, her 2nd and 3rd most heavily edited article talk pages are:

  • 245 Intelligent design
  • 241 Intelligent design/Archive 23

Does that mean she has a total of 486 talk page edits on Intelligent design? Or what? Thanks.--Filll (talk) 18:13, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Articles Started Tool

[edit]

I just whipped up a PHP script on my local MediaWiki site to show articles started by a user, and was just wishing I could run it on the Wikimedia servers... In the course of poking around I saw your tool, but noticed that it's only done by request. Does it take a long time to run? (It's nice and snappy on mine, but my database is about 10MB and cached in RAM...) In any case, would you be so kind as to run a report for my username when you get a chance? No sense in me duplicating your efforts and trying to sign up for the toolserver. Fogster (talk) 18:58, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Interiot,

first of all: thank you for programming all that well used tools for the community. Some of them are used by me often, and some are inofficial part of the official structures of the german WP, that I belong to. E.g. your editcount tool, that is very helpful during admin elections etc.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Fire sign.png, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Fire sign.png is a duplicate of an already existing article, category or image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Fire sign.png, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Your counter in the Wikipedia user interface

[edit]

Hi Interiot. In case you still read your talk page sometimes:

We are now using your counter in the Wikipedia user interface. It is in the box at the bottom of all logged in user's contributions pages.

Now we have a concern: The counter is set to default not render the two upper graphs. We want to know if that is on purpose to save tool server load? We would like to know that before we add the parameter to make those images render. Since the link in that contributions page box perhaps causes many thousands of requests a day to your counter. So I wonder: Is it okay that we add the parameter to the URL in that box or not?

Here is our discussion about this at the talk page of that contributions page box: MediaWiki talk:Sp-contributions-footer#Add &showgraphs=2d to interiot. I'd love if you could respond over there.

I just went to check my edit count with Tool1, and it put it down to 5403 for some reason. Special:Preferences says my edit count is in the 7000s, as have past counts with Tool1. Problem with the edit counter

[edit]

Days ago, Tool1 reported me passing the 8000th edit line, but now it says I have 7871 edits. I've checked Special:Contributions/Admiral Norton and I have more than 8000. The Tool3 also corroborates that. I'd like you to look into this. Admiral Norton (talk) 12:16, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have a similar problem Tool1 says I have 1962 edits, but I do have about 2900 (including >600 at group (mathematics), which are completely lost in the counter). Jakob.scholbach (talk) 15:22, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I, too am having the problem with Tool1. I did have over 5,000 edits last week, and now have only about 4,500, with dozens of edit being removed from the 12/2007 and 1/2008 months. Tool3, however, seems to show my correct number of edits. Timmeh! 17:59, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Same here - this seems to be a problem with Tool1 no longer counting "File" or "Image" (the depreciated type) edits. - AKeen (talk) 18:15, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I compared tool1 and tool3's counts of my "mainspace" edits, and tool1 shows 700 less than tool3. For me, it deleted mostly mainspace edits; I haven't made many image or file edits. Timmeh! 02:26, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, Imitation Kate is broken. For those concerned, this tool is similar and works, though it only shows top user talk and top mainspace edits. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 06:41, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This seems to be a parser problem, as far as I can tell. For me, the articles which stopped being counted were articles with brackets in their name. Hopefully it's fixed soon! -- Ynhockey (Talk) 03:22, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit counter

Hi, for some reason the edit counter (http://toolserver.org/~interiot/cgi-bin/count_edits?user=Qllach&dbname=cawiki_p) seems to have stopped at the end of 2008, I can't see my edits in January 2009. Thanks for checking it.--Qllach (talk) 17:57, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I find that my total edit count is decreasing month by month. On Feb 2, 2009, it is 21231. Back on January 2, 2009, it was 22789. The articles I edited in January 2009 have certainly not all been deleted, since the tool presently credits me with several hundred edits in January 2009. What is going on? Was it wrong on Jan 2 or is it wrong now? Has it been infected with the software used to count votes on electronic voting machines in some U.S. states? If a Wikipedia user does several hundred edits a month, the total should NOT DECREASE! Thanks. Edison (talk) 02:18, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The same question for me (http://toolserver.org/~interiot/cgi-bin/count_edits?dbname=idwiki_p&user=Meursault2004) for my edits on Javanese Wikipedia. Meursault2004 (talk) 09:50, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:PopulousII.gif. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Why my editcounter doesn't show any graph?

[edit]

The question is not so clear. I don't understand the difference between opting in and opting out. What I know is that I'd like to see graphs in my editcounter. What should I do? I already made this modification to my user talk page.

And now? --Zabob (talk) 18:46, 16 February 2009 (UTC) (also known as it:User:Tener)[reply]

TStoc

[edit]

Hi, I've added all my tools to TStoc (putting me at the top of your tool count by a wide margin ;-) and I'd like to mention a few issues with your (otherwise splendid) tool:

  • The List of tools not yet registered shows my CommonsHelper, even though it has been on TSoc for quite a while. Maybe you're not checking for URLs without the server name? I've added the "short form" URL as also-url for all my tools, and hope that it will solve the problem (currently it doesn't, but maybe it's a cache issue)
  • Your tags appear to be case-sensitive. I suggest to make them lowercase, so there won't be tools with "Commons" and others with "commons"
  • Clicking on the PMID tag, I get "No tools matched that criteria". However, there is a tool by Holek that has the PMID tag.

So much for complaining ;-) --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:15, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
