User talk:Lbockhorn
Welcome to Wikipedia
[edit]Hello and welcome. I replied to your idea here. Thanks. Biosthmors (talk) 19:26, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi Lbockhorn. I also commented at WikiProject Medicine, but I thought I'd expand a bit here. The talk page of the article Social determinants of health indicates that article has serious problems. Indeed, someone has just proposed deleting the article, and someone else has suggested it should be kept but improved. I'd say you've turned up at just the right time.
User:Allens seems quite engaged at the moment, and might be interested in collaborating. I've mentioned your proposal to him on his |talk page. If you have any queries, feel free to ask on my talk page. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 04:18, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Orphaned talk page
[edit]Please read this discussion. In your case I have moved the page to User talk:Lbockhorn/sandbox. I am slightly dubious about this subject, but if an article is accepted, the title should of course be social determinants of health in poverty. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 09:20, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- I understand. I will be making an article as soon as possible. I was not aware that was the policy for new articles. I was instructed to make a discussion page in class but have not yet been instructed to create the page. How elaborate does the page need to be to have the talk page up? I believe any unfinished article I post will be in a greater threat of being deleted and therefore thought it would be important to begin with a talk page. — Lbockhorn (talk) 00:29, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
I hope you have brought our policy on talk pages to the attention of your teacher. Goodness! You need instructions to create a page? Don't be silly, just go ahead and do it but do it in user:Lbockhorn/sandbox. If you do it there you don't need to worry about whether it is "elaborate" enough - you will have all the time you need to provide decent references, etc. However, I am very dubious about your choice of subject and your outline: I fear that it will be tagged for deletion as essay / original research and fork of the existing article. I strongly recommend you to work on cleaning up social determinants of health instead. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 02:24, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- I have visited and read the page Social determinants of health many times, including the warnings, and because of those I would not like to simply extend on that page for many reasons.
I opt to create a new page rather than edit the existing page “Social Determinants in Health” for the following reasons:
1. That article has many tags for subpar content, including having multiple issues, being written like a personal reflection or essay rather than an encyclopedic description of the subject, disputed neutrality, a slanted tone, and the perspective provided deals primarily with Canada and does not represent a world view.
2. This article does not provide a specific approach to how poverty, low income, or low socioeconomic status greatly affects the health of people, and how even with those in poverty there is great disparity between health outcomes. Neglect of this fact provides readers with a limited scope of just how divisively health care disparities cut society, even within similar income classes within a country and across the world.
3. Finally, structural causes inherent in society are not clearly represented, and need to be to provide a clear picture to the public of how structural institutions and policy provide these health differentials between different groups of people, even within the lives of the impoverished.
Lbockhorn (talk) 13:12, 15 March 2012 (UTC) lbockhorn
- I'd very much like to see what you come up with. As RHaworth suggests, though, regardless of what you initially call it, work on it on a page called user:Lbockhorn/something. That way, you won't be harrassed while you're working on it. Once it's done, if you think it should replace that mess at Social determinants of health, invite a few opinions - me, RHaworth, and a general invite at the medicine project would be good. (But please fully grasp WP:MEDRS and emulate the style of other med/psych articles as outlined at WP:MEDMOS.) If you can pull this off it'll be both very impressive and a good thing. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 13:35, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- Lbockhorn, thanks for discussing this. Here's what I think:
- 1. If you edit social determinants of health (SDoH), you are not obligated to clean up the various sections. Nothing here is compulsory. So don't feel like that entire article would become your responsiblity. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "specific approach", but maybe my reply to #2 addresses that concern. I hope you don't mean a specific theoretical approach to the subject, as that sounds like something that is done more in an essay, and not in a neutral encyclopedia. Sometimes though it does make sense to narrow the approach to an article a bit, as is done at intelligent design, where the article starts of by saying "This article is about intelligent design as promulgated by the Discovery Institute."
- 2. Perhaps a good solution would be to write a poverty section at SDoH. I just created one:[1]. Maybe you could start your work there. When it becomes long enough, it could perhaps be split into the article you envision.
- 3. I'm not sure what you're saying you want to write, but a theoretical framework, or background information regarding SDoH could be discussed at another new section at SDoH you could start titled "Background".
- In other words, there's no reason you can't put in good new sections into what is now an article with some poorly written sections. Are you somehow required to start a new article for a grade in a class? I hope my comments help. Some people say Wikipedia has too many people citing too many rules that discourage new editors, but I hope you don't take our comments that way. We'd like to see you make some great contributions. Thanks. Biosthmors (talk) 16:36, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- I just read your outline at User_talk:Lbockhorn/sandbox. Hopefully, others more knowledgeable than me will do so and comment. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 18:12, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
I just put up the new outline at User:Lbockhorn/sandbox . The first draft of the article should be up tonight in my sandbox. I would appreciate any feedback. My foremost difficulty is breaking down direct quotations into paraphrased sentences, so if my article has too many direct quotes, please let me know and maybe make a suggestion of how to convert it? Thank you. And yes, this is my first time, so be gentle :) Lbockhorn (talk) 15:40, 18 March 2012 (UTC)lbockhorn
File copyright problem with File:WHOprestoncurve.png
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:WHOprestoncurve.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Eeekster (talk) 00:39, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure whether this is the right way to do this, but I do not want to make any copyright infringements, I would only like to upload images to help demonstrate my page. I will remove the article and find out how to properly cite it. Thank you. Lbockhorn (talk) 00:45, 19 March 2012 (UTC)lbockhorn
I just tried to delete it and cannot figure out how. Please delete it if I do not provide the necessary material in time. I will try to find the necessary material. What should I do to provide copyright information about tables provided in World Development Reports and related reports? Lbockhorn (talk) 00:49, 19 March 2012 (UTC)lbockhorn

WHO images
[edit]Per page 2 of this document images from WHO documents are not in the public domain [2] I have written to the WHO previously and the person I contacted was not interested in making changes to this policy. This however is one initiative I think it would be good to persue (convincing the WHO that they should release their content under a creative commons license ).--Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 02:47, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
File source problem with File:WHOprestoncurve.png
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:WHOprestoncurve.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Thanks, Lbockhorn (talk) 00:18, 17 April 2012 (UTC)lbockhorn
- Yes but we cannot infringe upon copyright. We need to work on the World Health Organization to convince them to release their content into the public domain or under a creative commons license that we can use. I have attempted without success. Do you have any contacts at WHO? Otherwise you will need to create charts and graphs from scratch. Copyright
[edit]Hey Laura. Under no circumstances can copyrighted material be placed within a Wikipedia articles or uploaded. Please do not return this content as you have done here [5]. I will remove it again. To emphasize the gravity of this issue adding this content here is a copyright violation. --Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:21, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Laura, I'm a Wikipedia administrator. I just want to emphasize the importance of keeping these copyright-violating images out of the article. If you add them again, you will be temporarily blocked from editing and unable to continue work on your assignment. You can produce your own images based on the original data (e.g. in Excel), but if you do this, try not to make it look too similar to the original images. Thanks! Dcoetzee 23:30, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
I will remove them immediately. I am very sorry. Lbockhorn (talk) 04:03, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Lbockhorn
Thank you for removing them rather than blocking me. The only reason I added them back in the first place was that I believed I found the proper banner to mark them as available through the UN.

The Wikipedia Library now offering accounts from Cochrane Collaboration (sign up!)
[edit]The Wikipedia Library gets Wikipedia editors free access to reliable sources that are behind paywalls. Because you are signed on as a medical editor, I thought you'd want to know about our most recent donation from Cochrane Collaboration.
- Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization that conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.
- Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account.
- If you are still active as a medical editor, come and sign up :)

Human nutrition
[edit]Your version violates several guides of Wikipedia and the content of your edits suggest strongly of plagiarism from the UNICEF source. Help
[edit]I definitely do not intend to ruin your article or plagiarize. I have reviewed that material and I will review it again. Do you have any tips for me on how to present these straight forward facts in a less similar way to the material I drew my information from? I would appreciate any help. I have been editing this page for an assignment for my class Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities at Rice University, and only intend to make nutrition information more accessible. I apologize if any of my material has offended you. This is still a working project edit for me and I am happy to take any suggestions, collaborate, or change any inappropriate material. Thank you Lbockhorn (talk) 07:03, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
questions about revisions
[edit]I do not understand why you removed the information on minorities. I plan on expanding that section profoundly, but have only inserted a bit of information at this time due to other time commitments. However, do you see something inappropriate about that information? Also, child wasting is a technical term that signifies the degradation of bodily tissues due to severe malnourishment that is an indicator similar to stunting. May I please revert those edits? I will link the term you believe people do not recognize the term. Lbockhorn (talk) 07:09, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Please continue with your editing and additions, but I ask that you do not get absorbed with details. WP:BETTER teaches that an Article is not a scholarly paper that might be published among discerning and critical academic peers, but rather is intended for the general reader to become readily informed. Following the suggestions of WP:BETTER will help keep the Article clear and may be useful for your class assignment as an example of thoughtful writing style. --Zefr (talk) 05:47, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Deciding new structure
[edit]The organizational structure of malnutrition needs some more work I believe. Does the following structure provide a better combination of the previous article and the new social information that needs to be incorporated?
Individual nutrition challenges 4.2.3.1 Illnesses caused by improper nutrient consumption 4.2.3.3 Mental agility 4.2.3.4 Mental disorders 4.2.3.5 Cancer 4.2.3.6 Metabolic syndrome and obesity 4.2.3.7 Hyponatremia
Global nutrition challenges 2.1 Malnutrition and causes of death and disability 2.2 Child malnutrition 2.3 Adult overweight and obesity 2.4 Vitamin and mineral malnutrition 2.4.1 Iron deficiency and anaemia 2.4.2 Vitamin A deficiency 2.4.3 Iodine deficiency 2.5 Infant and young child feeding 2.6 Undernourishment
Are there any comments on this structure? Lbockhorn (talk) 15:17, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
