Trimming www in URL template

[edit]

Template:URL is designed to display the "www" as part of the link displayed and is clear that "Parameter 2 ({{URL|url name|optional display text}}) is deprecated". Is there any reason to make edits such as this one, whose only purpose is to trim the "www", without any explanation or policy-based justification in the edit summary? Alansohn (talk) 15:03, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've always just assumed that was what you were supposed to do. Most of the good article graded pages that have infobox websites drop the "www." from the URL. I started doing it when I saw an administrator using the URL template to drop the "www." so I just assumed it was correct. Yedaman54 (talk) 04:30, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There may well be other editors doing this, but I'm still not sure what it accomplishes. Can you point me to sample edits by an admin that do this? Maybe I can pursue this issue with other editors who might have an expanation. Alansohn (talk) 17:11, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Its been over an year since that edit but i'll do my best to find it. Yedaman54 (talk) 05:42, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
