Ōsumi Province - Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ōsumi Province (大隅国, Ōsumi no Kuni) was an old province of Japan in the area of Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Kyūshū.[1] It was sometimes called Gūshū (隅州).
Ōsumi had borders with Hyūga and Satsuma Provinces.
The ancient capital city of the province was near Kokubu.
History
[change | change source]In 713 (Wadō 6, 3rd month), the land of Ōsumi Province was separated from Hyūga.[2]
In the Meiji period, the provinces of Japan were converted into prefectures. Maps of Japan and Ōsumi Province were reformed in the 1870s.[3]
Japan's first satellite was named Ōsumi. It was launched February 11, 1970.[4]
