This calendar was started by King Shalivahana in 78 A.D. It was also known as Shaka era as it was the tribe that Shalivahana was in. Historians are confused of whether or not Shalivahana was Shaka himself or conquered Shaka. The Shaka calendar is both solar and lunar with the lunar month having the same number of months as the Vikram era. It begins on 22 March every year except in the Gregorian leap year which start on 21 March. The number of days in the Shaka era is 365.
