MediaWiki talk:Bad image list

MediaWiki:Bad image list prevents the transclusion of certain images when linked to in files, except for specified pages (i.e. [[File:Example.jpg]] would be rendered as File:Example.jpg instead of being embedded in the article if on this list).

Description

The images and other media files listed on MediaWiki:Bad image list are prohibited by technical means from being displayed inline on pages, besides specified exceptions. Images on the list have normally been used for widespread vandalism where user blocks and page protections are impractical.

Instructions

Making requests: Requests for additions, removals, or exceptions may be made on this page. Any administrator can make changes to the list. If there is no response after a reasonable time, consider repeating a request at the Administrators' noticeboard. If the file in question has no foreseeable good faith use, consider nominating it for deletion rather than requesting its addition to this list.
Posting to the list: The format is as follows: Only bulleted list items (lines starting with "*") are considered. The first link on a line must be the link to the high-risk image. It is recommended that you use an initial colon in this link, so people can view this page without seeing all the restricted images. Any subsequent links on the same line are exceptions, i.e. articles where that image is allowed to be displayed inline. Text outside of links is ignored and can be used for comments. Piped links cannot be used. Please check the spelling of potential duplicate images before removing.
Image description page: A bot will place {{Restricted use}} on the image description page. This will advise users how to request that the image to be allowed on articles (that is, to expand the except list for it).
Removal from the list: When removing deleted images from the list, please double-check that the relevant image talk page has been deleted as well.

Hi, File:Piledriver Sex Position V1.jpg, with exception I guess for articles such as Sex position.

(The image was used inappropriately on Wikidata not long ago. I know that this list doesn't affect other projects; this is just FYI).

I think you'll agree it's going to be pretty offensive if it's used in the wrong place (probably how it ended up here in the first place). Anyway, for reference it was added in 2020 by Malcolmxl5, so let's casually float the idea their way. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 16:02, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My memory of the summer of 2020 is pretty hazy but it’s likely it was being spammed across the encyclopedia by someone who thought it funny to do that. Perhaps they’ve gone away. Let’s remove it from the list and see. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 16:19, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

zzuuzz I think the difference with that one is that while there are a certain number of articles that Osama's face would be offensive on, for most of the images here, there are a certain number of articles that it would *not* be offensive on. For example, to pick a random image here, a photo of an inserted butt plug might be viewed as offensive on the page for M&T Bank Stadium (The stadium that the Baltimore Ravens play at) where Osama's face wouldn't be viewed in the same way. I don't know if there is anyway to *reverse* the Mediawiki tech to only ban it from a specific number of articles.
