Seattle Sounders FC

[edit]

I'd be the 1st to know since I'm from Seattle, if they put the name down as Freddie Ljungberg, then the page should be named Freddie Ljungberg, that's what I've been trying to tell you guys. – Michael (talk) 19:36, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't care, the page should be "Freddie Ljungberg", you're making a big deal about nothing. – Michael (talk) 22:50, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It should be Freddie Ljungberg, I don't care if his nickname is Freddie. Example, Jô is Joao Alves de Assis Silva's nickname, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, a lot of pages have nicknames for their titles, so I don't get why you would question me titling Fredrik Ljungbergs page as Freddie Ljungberg, that's what I ment by not caring, you understand? – Michael (talk) 00:24, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Until now. Seattle Sounders FC. – Michael (talk) 03:50, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Does this change it? – Michael (talk) 04:00, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If it's Fredrik Ljungberg and Seattle has his name as Freddie Ljungberg, that makes it all confusing, as I said earlier is that I changed it to Freddie Ljungberg because the Seattle Sounders put his name down as Freddie Ljungberg. Things change dude. – Michael (talk) 17:30, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Over-achievers

[edit]

Great work on the box and intro. Rather than cut and paste the two sandboxes and then go live I'm just going to be bold and do that straight into a list on mainspace at List of football players with top domestic, continental and international honours. Observations

[edit]

I note with interest your comments at 2008-2009 Israel Gaza conlict. You state that you do not "buy" UN anti-Israel bias. The reason why many feel the UN is indeed anti-Israel, is because of the disproportionate number of United Nations resolutions concerning Israel. This is due to the Arab-Muslim block who are naturally biased aginst Israel. Secondly, you mention "if any other country in the world bombed a school filled with refugee families killing the same number civilians, it would cause an outcry." And rightly so. I have not compared reactions, but would suggest that the international resonse to the Israeli school attack would be more widespread than, let's say the Vaharai Bombing attack. I think this kind of hypocrisy gets at some Israel supporters. Regards, Chesdovi (talk) 00:18, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

La liga squad templates

[edit]

I was under impression that only first team players were to be listed on squad templates which means basicly there should only be twenty-five players listed plus those who have injury exemptions like van Nistelrooy & Diarra. Rfef states that players with kit numbers between 1-25 are on the first team while those players from the reserves and youth squads have kit numbers from 26 on upwards. Bueno & Palanca plus any other reserve or youth team members who are called to the first team are to be listed in the "from the youth section". Raul17 (talk) 19:46, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Italian and English rules are different from the Spanish. But if you think about it, would it make sense to list every reserve player who makes a first team appearance? Raul17 (talk) 02:46, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great work on this. The new layout is quite a bit cleaner, and makes the scoreline stand out. Cheers! Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 10:49, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: a or an?

[edit]

It's "an" because the word that immediately follows the indefinite article begins with a vowel sound. It just sounds wrong to say "a association football league", just like it would be wrong to say "a elephant". That's why. – PeeJay 01:07, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've come across a problem with this template. Take a look at 1983 FA Cup Final and you may see what I mean. – PeeJay 14:07, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't say I'm a big fan of that solution, as it seems to be presenting the score at the top as some sort of aggregate result, when the two results should be treated equally. I was rather hoping it would be possible to make the "team1" and "team2" fields optional when "Replay" is entered in the "secondleg" field. – PeeJay 15:26, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, good point. Then again, since the font size for the scores is smaller when there is a second leg, it should be possible to see the result of both matches on the screen at once, which should make it clear. – PeeJay 15:30, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edwin van der Sar/Andres Palop

[edit]

Re: your edit summary on Edwin van der Sar, why can't we have it thus? It makes no sense having a player's national team listed if he's made no appearances for the team. I think this may be a topic for the WikiProject as a whole to discuss. – PeeJay 22:32, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As long as the situation is properly explained in the article prose, then the start date really should be the year of the player's first cap. – PeeJay 22:41, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree, but like I say, maybe this should be taken to WT:FOOTY, as it affects a plethora of articles. – PeeJay 23:18, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hakan Yakin

[edit]

I have reverted your edit. There are numerous reasons as to why subject's names are given in a variety of languages across the site, and ethnicity is just one of them. The variation I gave you is not simply the way his name is spelt in another language, it is the model on which his actual name is based; if I wanted to give people's names in other languages, I'd have sought their forms in Arabic, Mandarin and the like. These are not relevant here. I recently sent this message which may explain to you the practice: [2] (the bottom two paragarphs), it gives numerous examples. If the code of practice does not suit you, please attempt to standardise the pages given, then we can discuss the Yakin brothers. Thank you. Evlekis (talk) 23:14, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Homer Simpson and Macedonia

[edit]

Nice link you gave in your response, Homer & his spider-pig rule! :)

Anyway, see my evidence page, how do you explain the related searches in English speaking countries like alexander macedonia (not the search "ancient macedonia" that also appears) and macedonia greece (not "greek macedonia"). People just put one second word like "alexander" to find the right "macedonia" when they search Google. And here is just a sample of American media uses of "Macedonia", alone with no qualifiers like "ancient" or "Greek": to refer to Macedonia in antiquity[3][4] to refer to the region or the Greek part of it[5][6]. Also note that media would be reporting recent news mostly. Try searching for "Macedonia" in a sample of English books in Google Books. "Aristotle was born in Macedonia":234 results. "Aristotle was born in Macedon": 4 results."Aristotle was born in ancient Macedonia":5 results. So what English speakers are you refering to? Try other searches like this and be objective. Thank you Shadowmorph (talk) 19:29, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See also "tomb in Macedonia":198 results and "tomb in Macedon":2 results.
Oh, and you said Macedonia with no context, doesn't the "...to hold elections" constitute a modern-country context? Shadowmorph (talk) 21:59, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Competion, not the final

[edit]

Hi. UEFA rebranded the competition before the 1992-93 season, but not the final, which was rebranded only in 1995. Look at the poster, or at the tickets, or see this video about the 1993's final in Youtube [7]: there were no symbols of the UCL in the stadium, not at all. The official name of the match was "The 38th European Champion Clubs' Cup Final". Bye!--Akrothiri (talk) 22:01, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wait a moment, look at the sources! The logo in the the video is not original, it has been put nowadays by the tv channel (ESPN Classic Sport, if you look in HD). Listen, in this link the situation is clear [8]: 1993 and 1994 were official called "European Champion Clubs'Cup Final" yet (1994's poster is in English, if you dont't undestand the 1993 German one). In 1995 the final was first called Uefa Champions League final [9]. UEFA internet site talks about the 1992/93 season because it was when the group stage was rebranded, but it doesn't talk about the finals (which were under contract with the EBU until 1994). Bye!--Akrothiri (talk) 22:22, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What do you read here [10] on the official match programme produced by UEFA? What do you read here [11] on the official match programme produced by UEFA?--Akrothiri (talk) 22:50, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Common name on an official match programme? What are you saying?--Akrothiri (talk) 23:35, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but this is only your personal opinion. There is the UEFA logo on that poster, and the UEFA isn't similar to a supporter who can speak in "a common way", UEFA is the official source for the competion we are speaking of. And UEFA said "The 39th ECCC Final" for Milan-Barcelona in Athens. --Akrothiri (talk) 00:43, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

[edit]

Hi, I'm posting the same message to you and Fasach Nua. After discussing possible alterations to the Defunct national teams template at ludicrous length and seeing the problems on both sides of this argument, I think I can offer a solution.

All team articles that have a recognised successor should be merged and redirected to their successor's article (eg South Vietnam national football team merged into Vietnam national football team). In the case of Russia/CIS/USSR there may be a case for having separate articles on the teams' histories for the sake of length but not 3 separate 'national team' articles. The introduction would explain the team's history, and historic names would be bolded - much like the current Congo DR national football team article. I explained the rationale here, and although there was only one reply, there wasn't any disagreement so it doesn't seem like it would be a controversial move.

This would make the 'other' section of the template meaningless as all the listed teams would simply be redirects. The template could have a footnote redirecting here and/or here for further information if you wanted.

Let me know what you think. Stu.W UK (talk) 11:59, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, fair point about the Czechoslovakia records, hadn't thought of that. I don't think the template as it stands is a problem either, but I thought I'd try and be constructive. Still, Fasach Nua got a ban for breaking 3rr so maybe that'll draw a line under things. Stu.W UK (talk) 13:31, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Champions League template

[edit]

Your rationale here includes the line "it does look very crammed in". That's rather the point - fb templates are supposed to be compact navigational tools, not pretty tables. The previous version was significantly more compact (not too compact IMO) even at 1/3 width. I really think we should go with that even at the reduced width. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:08, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've put a side-by-side comparison up at Template:UEFA Champions League/testcases. I don't see that the new layout is significantly more cramped than any other navbox - it is considerably more legible, as even with good eyesight I'm straining to read the text in the current version. I can see no real reason for not using the layout recommended by the navbox documentation for the sake of adding a bit more whitespace, especially when it forces the use of a smaller font. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 01:09, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For me the one on the left is about three fourths the height, using the space better imo.
Now I have no problem in using a larger font-size, the one used currently at losing semi finalists perhaps for all on the old (which I think is what navbox standard would look without the font-size "corruption" in fb start, which perhaps should be removed to let Navboxes look a bit more how they should). But otherwise perhaps I would be more like the example I added on the testcases (a proposed change to fb start really the width can be discussed as it becomes narrower as you remove the font-size I tried to choose one that was the similar width) that as I see it make it look much less cramped just because of the smaller font I guess. chandler ··· 01:32, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I like the look of your "new new" proposal. If that's okay with you, I think it's a fine compromise. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 01:46, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ye I like it as well, it would just need {{fb start}} to be edited to remove the "font-size:95%" (which I think would make all navbox templates look better). I don't really know what kind of effect this would have on non-navbox templates, shouldn't be any big effect I guess. chandler ··· 01:52, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for engaging in an edit war. Please be more careful to discuss controversial changes or seek dispute resolution rather than engaging in an edit war. {{Unblock on hold|1=Rettetast|I've only been reverting one single user who has a problem understanding what a certain number of articles are about, that is former national football teams (he's vandalized it (example) and even put it up for deletion). As can be seen in the history, it's one user editing against multiple editors other over a period of time, the version which I reverted to was the one that he even had agreed to on the talk page, but suddenly started editing away from again, I see that during the last 24 hours it is only HE who has made over 3 edits, all WP:POINT and WP:DISRUPT edits reverted by me and User:MusicInTheHouse, if anyone he should've been blocked for disrupting a perfectly fine nav. template that he's on a crusade against.|slakrtalk / 03:05, 24 May 2009 (UTC)}}[reply]

In investigating this, I've tentatively come to the conclusion that I agree with your rationale. Fasach Nua (talk · contribs)'s edits do appear to be disruptive in nature, in that consensus seems to be against them. I've contacted the blocking admin for his opinion on the matter. --slakrtalk / 03:05, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree that Fasach Nua has been disruptive, but I don't agree that continued reverts instead of using the talk page to form consensus is a good idea. Both parties has arguments that are valid, something that the current discussion at WT:FOOTY shows. The history of this template is a shame and the warning on the talk page was clear that any further edit warring would lead to blocks. Rettetast (talk) 17:39, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I just removed the on hold template, since it was causing a backlog and this has since become moot. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:10, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Map expansion request

[edit]

Hello chandler, I could use some help on the map for Süper Lig 2009–10. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to transform the existing map into one similar to the EPL map, with all five Istanbul stadia applied. The coordinates for those are:

  • Besiktas: 41.039206, 28.994742
  • Fenerbahce: 40.987778, 29.036667
  • Galatasaray: 41.06545, 28.998967
  • Istanbul B.B.: 41.074472, 28.765703
  • Kasimpasa: 41.032806, 28.972322

Thanks a lot, --Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 11:39, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I thought more of a version with arrows instead of the conventional dots with no changes to the base template, with the Istanbul clubs aligned just like the London clubs in the Premier League map. There is also the question if and where an altered Turkish map could be useful, aside from football (or probably other sports) articles. In any case, feel free to do as you like, and thanks again! :-) --Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 18:36, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This arbitration case has been closed and the final decision is available at the link above.

  • All editors on Macedonia-related articles are directed to get the advice of neutral parties via means such as outside opinions and Geopolitical ethnic and religious conflicts noticeboard (WP:ECCN), especially since there are significant problems in reaching consensus.
  • All articles related to Macedonia (defined as any article that could be reasonably construed as being related to Macedonia, Macedonia nationalism, Greece related articles that mention Macedonia, and other articles in which how Macedonia will be referred to is an issue) fall under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned. Editors enforcing a case where a binding Stalemate resolution has been found are exempt from 1RR.
  • The following users have been banned from Wikipedia : Avg (talk · contribs)one year, ΚΕΚΡΩΨ (talk · contribs)one year, and Reaper7 (talk · contribs)six months .
  • The following users have been topic-banned from Macedonia-related articles and their talk pages, as defined in All related articles under 1RR: Avg (talk · contribs)indefinitely, ΚΕΚΡΩΨ (talk · contribs)indefinitely, Reaper7 (talk · contribs)one year and, SQRT5P1D2 (talk · contribs)one year.
  • The Committee takes note that ChrisO (talk · contribs) has resigned his administrator status while this case was pending, but also notes that he is desysopped as a result of the above case. ChrisO may obtain the tools back via the usual means or by request to the Arbitration Committee.
  • Future Perfect at Sunrise (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) is strongly admonished for displaying a long pattern of incivil, rude, offensive, and insulting behavior towards other editors and failure to address the community's concerns in this regard. Because of this Future Perfect at Sunrise is subject to an editing restriction for one year, and is desysopped for three months as a consequence of poor user conduct and misuse of administrative tools. After three months, his administrator access will be automatically restored.
  • Single-purpose accounts are strongly advised to edit in accordance with WP:SPA and other Wikipedia policies. Diversifying one's topics of interest is also encouraged.
  • Abuse filter 119, as currently configured, logs all changes involving the word "Macedonia" but does not block any edits. The community is strongly advised to consider adding a new abuse filter criterion; any instances of changing the word "Macedonia" to "FYROM" (the five-letter acronym, not the full phrase) shall be prevented.
  • Within seven days of the closure of this case, a discussion is to be opened to consider the preferred current and historical names for the four entities known as Macedonia. The discussion will end one month after it is opened.

S.S. Lazio kits

[edit]

Hi. Could you create the news S.S. Lazio kits? Here there are the photos: first kit and second kit. It would be wonderful if you are able also to insert the Coccarda Italia!--Andrea 93 (msg) 16:09, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man, I noticed that you created File:Kit body manutd 09-10 home.png, so I was wondering if you could create a similar one for the away kit. I gave it a go at File:Kit body manutd 09-10 away.png, but it's a bit of a ragged effort, so I was hoping that you could give it a bit of a touch up. I think the colour may need modifying slightly too. – PeeJay 22:01, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Warning

[edit]

Please stop assuming ownership of articles such as Template:UEFA Euro winners. Doing so may lead to disruptive behavior such as edit wars and is a violation of policy, which may lead to a block from editing. - Sthenel (talk) 19:02, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Who has told you that you have to share the titles to modern states? And stop with this FIFA thing, they just mention the titles in the confederations' pages, since no Czechoslovakian or USSR confederation exists anymore, but this in not an argument for naming Slovakia and the Czech Republic as two of the European champions. On the other hand, UEFA (which runs the tournament) lists the winners as they are with their old names and if you look at their page they don't name any of the current states successor of the former. Additionally, you are the only one in the history of the template that you insist on this version and you have reverted all the other editors and you don't take part to any discussion. You don't own any article to be against to the other's common opinion. Czechoslovakia and USSR were the champions and you have no right to add Slovakia or Russia in the template, since there is no need to do so, just like you did in Germany, where it should be a reference like that you have added. When Russia or Slovakia won a title, you could add them as current states (the same with Germany), this is what editors do in a number of other articles related to international tournaments and their winners. - Sthenel (talk) 21:59, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sthenel asked me to look in at Template:UEFA Euro winners, but I don't see Chandler's views on the discussion page. Could you guys please settle this through discussion and compromise if necessary rather than reverting?   Will Beback  talk

My answer in the talk page of the template. Discuss there. - Sthenel (talk) 01:29, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I also was going to make a mention here to see if you would provide reasoning on the talk page. My explanation for why we should be discussing instead of edit warring along with reasoning as to why I disagree with your is there. Template talk:UEFA Euro winners Just a quick heads up to cover all of our bases, I plan on making the change in 24 hours if you don't respond. If you continue to edit war after that then we go from having fun making sports articles to the lame process of seeking administrator oversight.Cptnono (talk) 13:33, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"UK time" isn't always GMT, and it still doesn't mean we have to add it... People can just as easily calculate from South African time and looking at the other schedule articles they dont have multiple time zones chandler 16:45, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I saw you changed my edit on Template:2010 FIFA World Cup Group C, but it is somewhat inaccurate since England and the United States are currently tied for the second spot.

I was curious as to your reasoning for your edit since it had no edit summary. Doc Quintana (talk) 16:51, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have also put a notice on WP:AN Doc Quintana (talk)

I read your reason for deleting the scenarios. I disagree with your decision, and here are the reasons why:

  1. Unlike what you claim, there are only 9 possible scenarios based on win, draw, and loss.
  2. The table format is much easier to see in one look than 20-line long list of scenarios. The table format is much simpler than the list format.

Hi. I reverted your edit to the 2010 Ryder Cup article. Liverpool F.C. wiki

[edit]

Hello, I am the lead sysop on the Liverpool F.C. wiki. It is a wiki dedicated solely to Liverpool F.C.. We aim to make the ultimate database for the club we all love. Since adopting the incredibly inactive wiki about a month ago we have greatly increased the article count and modernized it from it's previous state. The problem is there are not many active members on the site and we need more for the site to properly grow. It is well organized and on it's way to be a great site we just need more editors to expand. It is based on Wikia's network of wikis. Like Wikipedia it is free to use and the editing process is exactly the same. If you know how to edit Wikipedia you will know how to edit the Liverpool F.C. wiki. Now for the question you may be asking yourself. Why edit there? Wikipedia has articles on Liverpool. This is true. At the Liverpool wiki it is all about Liverpool. We allow editors to edit anything about Liverpool no matter how trivial. We allow edits on reserve and academy players, and even things as trivial as the fitness coaches for the year 2011. We also do not lock pages to registered users. That means if you have something to say about Steven Gerrard you can click edit and not view source and actually write something. I would love for you to come by and check the wiki out. Feel free to edit any page. Every time you click edit your ARE helping this wiki grow. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Invite to the African Destubathon

[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. We're into the last five days of the Women in Red World Contest. There's a new bonus prize of $200 worth of books of your choice to win for creating the most new women biographies between 0:00 on the 26th and 23:59 on 30th November. If you've been contributing to the contest, thank you for your support, we've produced over 2000 articles. If you haven't contributed yet, we would appreciate you taking the time to add entries to our articles achievements list by the end of the month. Thank you, and if participating, good luck with the finale!

The file File:Wpbm redborders.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Old orphaned esoteric file.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13Talk 17:45, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
