Thomas Zahariou page

[edit]

Hey

Just saw you left some notes on the page Thomas Zahariou I created. Just want to get some clarification on what exactly is unreliable and also about notability? For the former, I used sources that reference him, but I can add more if needed. On the latter, he is a member of a very notable Australian comedy group.

Just need some clarification. Thanks Basetornado (talk) 12:36, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sae Maeda Sources Question

[edit]

Hey there! I put the career section back up and sourced the royal ballet bio page of the dancer. I used this other page as an example: Laura Morera which also seems to use the royal ballet bio page as a source. My question is that since Ms. Maeda is a dancer with the Royal Ballet, does her bio page constitute a third party source? I am not entirely sure about it. But on the other hand, it does seem to be the best source to find out about her career since it's technically her workplace. What do you think? I am happy to make any changes to help improve the quality of the article and ensure I'm using good sources. First Soloists don't get as much media exposure as Principal Dancers so sometimes it's a bit hard to find quality sources. But I'll do my best to keep finding sources. I'm hoping to bring up some more dancer pages (I like ballet!), so this will be good practice for me. I am a new editor. Nice to meet you! Edit: Hey can you help me understand what I need to do to get the sources tag removed? What did you notice wasn't right? I used a different style for the source I added. Does that help? NPP

[edit]

Following the concerns raised at AN I have removed your New Page Reviewer permission. I know this is a strong step and it's one I'm sorry to take, but based on the many concerns raised it seems like your efforts may be better focused on other areas of improving the encylopedia. Barkeep49 (talk) 19:33, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Barkeep49, thanks for notifying me. I would respectfully like to ask for your reconsideration. I have certainly helped far far far more than I have harmed, and I've tried always to learm from the advice given to me. As you will see above from the barnstars for NPP, other editors signalled that in fact I was on the right track. I regret learning of my mistakes. I have a disability and have little to do in life. But I can sit at a computer and help with Wikipedia. I believe strongly in its mission, and I want it to be accurate and reliable. I've always edited with this as my only goal. I do humbly ask you for a second chance. Please let me prove myself. I am not proud or stubborn and I do take guidance on board. Than you very much. Best wishes, BoyTheKingCanDance (talk) 06:01, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just yesterday, I told you about your premature draftifications on GPL’s talk page, and you said, “Now I do.” Yet today, you draftified this article within 15 minutes after its creation, violating WP:NPPHOUR and WP:DRAFTNO. Haven’t you read the NPP guide before reviewing articles? GrabUp - Talk 14:22, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I found that you draftified it due to a copyright issue, However, we have speedy deletion options for such cases. Draftifying a copyright-violating article and keeping it in the draft space is not great. GrabUp - Talk 14:30, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear GrabUp, my thought was to remove it from the mainspace because of what seems to be a copyright violation so that the author could, as a minimum, paraphrase it to remove the violation. Draftifying wasn't ideal, true, but I saw getting it off the mainspace and highlighting the violation as the best first step. Speedy deletion would have been better and in future that's what I would advance as the better option. Thanks, BoyTheKingCanDance (talk) 15:29, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Barkeep49 This reads very much like a genuine response if you ask me. I would also urge GreenLipstickLesbian and GrabUp to put their hands together to help BTKCD's reviews become better. I am not challenging your decisions please, I am only joining BTKCD to ask that he be reconsidered and his right be reinstated as he's one of the most active NPPers we have on ground. He has definitely done too many good reviews for his NPP to be pulled off just like this. I know for sure that making mistakes anywhere in the encyclopedia is at the expenses of the encyclopedia itself (even sometimes, the foundation), so trust me to understand the cost of mistakes at NPP.
I'm pretty sure BTKCD will now be super careful, at the very least. I can also volunteer to look out for him and his reviews to ensure they're appropriate. I really did not buy the idea of taking an issue like this straight to ANI when we have WT:NPP, but like I said at NPP discord, the deed has been done.
And to BTKCD, if the NPP right peradventure get reinstated, I'd urge you to please reach out whenever in doubt. And to GLL and GrabUp, I'd urge ya'll to look out for fellow NPPers whether they're responsive or not.
As a matter of fact, I am currently in the spree of correcting the mistakes that almost EVERY NPPer has made in the past. If I was to raise this issue at ANI, then maybe the NPP flag of 100 NPPers would be removed.
Kind regards, Barkeep49. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 14:33, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I would just say, let’s give them one more chance because of their good efforts at NPP. Also, I trust @Vanderwaalforces and they and us will guide BTKCD. How about giving them a 3- or 6-month trial? After that, they can request an extension at PERM. If they have truly fixed their work, they’ll get permanent status, but if not, they will be stopped. GrabUp - Talk 15:07, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Careful of the idea that doing a high volume of X = bad Y is OK. The community at some ANIs I've seen has not usually agreed with this idea.
Not sure I fully agree with Barkeep that BTKCD should quit NPP completely and focus on a completely different area of the encyclopedia. Perhaps BTKCD can (if still motivated) continue doing NPP-adjacent tasks such as AFD/AFC/CSD participation and rebuild the lost community trust. But the trust will take time to rebuild, I think. And will require a good attitude and a willingness to respond well to and calibrate to feedback.
I have no objection if BTKCD is able to convince Barkeep to restore the NPP perm through good answers to Barkeep's question below. But be ready if the answer is still a no. Lost trust takes time to rebuild. –Novem Linguae (talk) 15:30, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree actually to the X = bad Y thing. And yes, I hope BTKCD is able to convince Barkeep. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 15:34, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BoyTheKingCanDance I have no doubt of your belief in the mission and your ability to do work that helps that mission. What I am wondering is if New Page Patrolling is the right way to act on that. Can you explain what you've learned from the discussion on AN and what you're going to do differently in the future if you continue doing NPP? Barkeep49 (talk) 15:09, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear all, the first thing I know I've learned is to have zero tolerance for unreliable sources. If there's little to no WP:SIGCOV from RS a page needs very serious work. I tended to be more tolerant of a few weaker sources here and there if a page contained at least a backbone of reliable sources, whereas I would now be stricter on those pages, and as a minimum I would highlight the unreliable sources with a template and NOT mark the page as reviewed. If the sources were seriously weak, or there were a lot of them, or there was another seriously weak combination of faults, I would draftify a page. The other thing I've learned is that there are subject-specific guidance pages that detail the respective strengths and weaknesses of sources. GrabUp kindly showed me the WP:ICTFSOURCES page, which I had no knowledge of, despite editing in this area, and it has greatly strengthened my knowledge of sources and their reliability pertaining to Indian cinema etc. Lastly, I've learned to slow down and look at EVERY source so that my assessment of a page is based around that to a greater degree than hitherto. Until now I've focused a lot on a page's overall quality. I looked to see if the tone was encyclopedic and had a NPOV (or fair coverage of various views), whether it had a proper lede and a correct page structure, whether it was written in correct and readable grammar and syntax, whether any sources were closely associated with the subject, and whether the subject itself was notable. In looking holistically like this, I may have inadvertently not given enough weight to the reliability of ALL sources. Lastly, I think I should ask more questions of other editors when I see something on a page that I'm unsure about. I should reach out. Asking is how I’ll learn. I've always found other editors to be super helpful, and I have always tried to follow advice. In closing, I humbly repeat my request for another chance. Wikipedia really means such a lot to me. I take my responsibilities seriously and really want to be the best editor that I can be. I also apologize that you're having to waste time guiding me today. With all my sincerity I'll truly try to be an ideal editor. Thank you for listening. Yours, BoyTheKingCanDance (talk) 15:46, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this response. I had been looking for this kind of substance before I pulled the permission. I will restore the permission for 3 months after which you should ask for it to be made re-permanent at WP:PERM/NPR. Barkeep49 (talk) 12:44, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Barkeep49 I am so happy you really considered this. Thank you so much. BTKCD, I hope you do as you say in your response above, there's nothing much left to say again. Happy reviewing, Vanderwaalforces (talk) 13:08, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
