User talk:VGrigas (WMF)

Hi. I realize that you're hardly alone in this, but it's borderline inappropriate for staff members of the Wikimedia Foundation to be editing its article here. It's particularly (and more unambiguously) inappropriate to include human resources promotional material from the Wikimedia Foundation in the article. Please don't re-insert File:Wikimedia Foundation extended HR video.ogv into the article. We would never allow such a video in any other article. There's absolutely no reason for an exception with the Wikimedia Foundation article. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:09, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Understood! And thank you for pointing it out , in retrospect now, I completely agree with you. Please slap me upside my head if I do something thoughtless like that again. Vgrigas (talk) 21:29, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks. :-)
I'm not sure if there are any guidelines for staff involvement in editing here. I know that the legal team has been trying to make user pages (and account names) clearer, but I'm not sure this particular area (staff editing articles about the Wikimedia Foundation) has been developed. Obviously fact checks or typo fixes are one thing. But there's a much larger, messier grey area. It'd be great to have more videos/multimedia in our articles, which I think is what you were really after. However, promotional videos... well, you know.
The guideline thing may be worth mentioning on the mailing list. I'd do it, but wikimedia-l doesn't need another thread from me. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:36, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

wow, thank you for informing me. It's good that this exists as a memorial to Adrianne. I interviewed her and edited the footage and uploaded the footage as it was a WMF production, but one of three or four photographers actually pressed record on the camera and composed the frame, in this case it was Matthew Storck (check the credits), I believe it would be fair to credit both of us, since it may be going to this level :) Victor Grigas (talk) 20:12, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania Interview

[edit]

Dear Vgrigas,

An interview would be great. Unfortunately, I will not be in London next week. I am currently in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. In ten-days' time I will travel to Uganda, where I will be conducting business for the next six months. I will be back in Atlanta in the spring of 2015. Regards. Release of personality rights

[edit]

I have the idea that if Wikipedia hosted stock photography of people that organizations would use that. This came up in the context of medicine - imagine health publications and ads with models depicted as using health services. I started wondering if in Wikimedia Commons there was a way for people depicted in photos. I think there is not.

As a WMF storyteller, you must be managing personality rights releases for the WMF. Are you able to share the personality rights release that the WMF uses? Are you aware of any text or discussion anywhere which discusses the implications of models releasing personality rights with a free and open license, or if any organization has ever considered such a thing? In your work has the issue of personality rights arisen in the context of pictures of Wikipedians you photograph being used in a way that touches the concept of personality rights? What can you tell me about your work and personality rights?

I know that stock photo companies have their models agree to use their photos in any context, because I have seen stories online about people having their photo used in unexpected ways years after they did the modeling.

I talk more about this at

MDennis is checking with WMF legal. I thought I would check with you. Next I will check with Creative Commons, and I am in the process of getting legal text from stock photo companies. If you know anything about this subject please share. If you know nothing in particular about this, it would be useful for me to hear that from you. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:58, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Really good idea! I'll ask someone on our legal team to comment, but anytime I interview anyone, I have them sign a waiver that our legal team has drafted. Victor Grigas (talk) 15:36, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not yet - we're working on transcription and I'm about to publish a short video from Jack Andraka. Everything will be on the WMF blog when it's ready, thanks for asking ! :)VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 20:24, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your question about interviewing me

[edit]

Thanks for the offer. However, it seems to me that the September 4, 2015 blog profile of the “WWII veteran, kamikaze survivor honors shipmates through Wikipedia articles” covers the “range of people” I am in very well. I do not see what a profile about me could add to it. Vejlefjord (talk) 22:19, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe I phrased my pitch poorly, most user profiles that I come across simply aren't that interesting. I thought that your profile was intriguing. In your profile, you mention that you're 91, you've had different lines of work, and that you are a professor emeritus at a graduate school. Those aspects caught my eye. Looking at your editing history, I imagine that it was a school with a religious affiliation? What lines of work? My father turns 96 in October and served 3.5 years in the combat engineers in WW2. His opinion has persisted that his being a soldier wasn't his greatest achievement, and he's done quite a few things between then and now. Renovating buildings in creative, thrifty ways is one of them. Anyway, I certainly don't want to waste your time, and thought I might ask (and do please refuse if you simply aren't interested). Thanks for the quick reply. VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 19:50, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
