The mixed 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2024 World Athletics Relays took place in three rounds at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, on 4 and 5 May 2024. It was the fourth time that this mixed-sex relay was contested at the World Athletics Relays. The event was also an Olympic qualification: fourteen teams qualified for the mixed 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.[1]
The four heats of round 1 were held on 4 May. Relay teams from 30 nations competed. Eight teams, the first two teams in each heat, simultaneously qualified for the finals and for the Summer Olympics, while the other teams advanced to a repechage round. In the first heat of round 1, the team of the Netherlands set a championship record of 3:12.16 minutes. In the second heat, the team of the United States set another championship record of 3:11.52 minutes. In the third heat, the team of Ireland set an Irish record of 3:12.50 minutes.
The three heats of the repechage round for the Olympic qualification were held on 5 May. Another six relay teams, the first two teams in each heat, qualified for the Summer Olympics. In the first heat, the home team of the Bahamas set a Bahamian record of 3:12.81 minutes. In the second heat, the teams of Switzerland and Canada set national records of 3.14.12 minutes and 3.14.66 minutes respectively.
The final was also held on 5 May. The relay team of the United States won in a championship record of 3:10.73 minutes, followed by the teams of the Netherlands in 3:11.45 minutes and Ireland in a national record of 3:11.53 minutes. Outside the medals, the team of Nigeria set an African record of 3:12.87 minutes.
Background
[edit]At the World Athletics Relays, the mixed 4 × 400 metres relay was introduced at the 2017 edition in Nassau, Bahamas, and had been contested three times before 2024.[2] Before the 2024 edition, the world record was 3:08.80 minutes set by the team of the United States in 2023 and the championship record was 3:14.42 minutes set by the Bahamian team in 2017.[3]

Results

[edit]On 4 May 2024, round 1 was held in four heats, starting at 19:05 (UTC-4).[4] The first two relay teams of each heat qualified for the final (Q) and simultaneously qualified for the mixed 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France (OG*).[5] The other teams advanced into a repechage round, where they got another chance for Olympic qualification.[1] In the first heat, the relay team of the Netherlands set a new championship record of 3:12.16 minutes.[5] In the second heat, the team of the United States broke the championship record again in a time of 3:11.52 minutes and the team of Bahrain did not finish (DNF).[5] In the third heat, the team of Ireland set a new national record (NR) of 3:12.50 minutes.[5] In the fourth heat, the team of Mexico was disqualified (DQ) for a fault at recovering a dropped baton (TR24.6).[5][6]
Repechage round
[edit]On 5 May 2024, the three heats of the repechage round for the Olympic qualification were held, starting at 19:05 (UTC-4).[4][7] Six relay teams, the first two teams of each heat, qualified for the mixed 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics (OG*).[7] In the first heat, the home team of the Bahamas set a national record (NR) of 3:12.81 minutes.[7] In the second heat, Switzerland set a national record of 3:14.12 minutes and Canada set a national record of 3:14.66 minutes.[7] The teams of Brazil, Czech Republic, and India did not start (DNS) in this round.[7]
Final
[edit]On 5 May 2024, the final was held, starting at 21:40 (UTC-4).[4] The race was won by the team of the United States in a championship record of 3:10.73 minutes, followed 0.72 seconds later by the team of the Netherlands in 3:11.45 minutes and another 0.08 seconds later by the team of Ireland in 3:11.53 minutes, which was a new national record (NR).[8] Outside the medals in fourth place, the team of Nigeria set a new African area record (AR).[8] the Belgian team was disqualified (DQ) for a fault at recovering a dropped baton (TR24.6) and the Polish team did not start (DNS) in the final.[8][6]
